Things to Do and Places to Stay
Marjorie Rawlings’ home, which is right on County Road 325, is the biggest attraction in Cross Creek. It is run by the state park system and you can tour the home and grounds. If you have a boat, there is a boat ramp right next to the Rawlings home on Orange Lake.
There are a few fish camps and cabins in the area. Twin Lakes Fish Camp is on Cross Creek with a view of Lockloosa Lake, it is located off County Road 325. They sell drinks, bait and some snacks in their small store. There are cabins to rent, a boat ramp and a gorgeous spot to sit and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Cross Creek Lodge is located on the Creek and offers rooms and a boat ramp.
The Yearling Restaurant is rather famous for its location and ambiance. The Yearling also rents cabins and is directly on the Creek.
Marjorie Rawlings and her husband, Norton Baskin, are buried in the old Antioch Cemetery just northeast of Island Grove. A visit to Antioch Cemetery is an interesting ride. Fans of Ms. Rawlings continue to decorate her grave with deer statues.
There is also a winery located at HWY 301 and State Road 325.
Micanopy has a great selection of antique shops in a beautiful historic downtown. For lodging, the Herlong Mansion is a gorgeous bed and breakfast. The movie Doc Hollywood was filmed in Micanopy. There are several nice places to dine. Pearls BBQ and Country Store sells the best barbeque. From ribs and chicken to sides cooked to perfection and delicious homemade desserts, you can’t go wrong. If you like pizza, the Blue Highway is available with wonderful pizza, sandwiches and salads. Both Pearls and Blue Highway are located on HWY 441 and County Road 234 in Micanopy. There are also a few café’s in Micanopy’s downtown.
Melrose is a small community with a grocery store, art galleries, etc. The Blue Water Bay Restaurant is famous for it’s Friday and Saturday night seafood buffet. There is also a fried chicken eat in or drive through establishment called Fyers. Melrose also has a sports bar, a local store with live music on weekends outside. Melrose is situated on Lake Santa Fe.
Gainesville is only a 25-minute drive from Cross Creek and offers everything you can imagine in restaurants and hotels, plus museums and the University of Florida.
Ocala is approximately 30 minutes south of Cross Creek. It also offers shopping and restaurants and a nice downtown. Ft. King, the site of the second Seminole War is right on the edge of downtown and is in the process of rebuilding the fort. They host a reenactment of the war each December.
